To all Shackelford descendants: Although I have told a number of people about an important mistake in my book "Our Colonial Ancestors", p. 99, it should be more broadly circulated. On that page, I said that Nancy A. (Amanda) Shackelford, sister of Joseph Henry, and wife of Thomas Allen Massey, had died in AL as did her husband, leaving only Robert Allen Massey. When Bessie Youngblood Locke got my book, she told me that this was incorrect; that Nancy Amanda had remarried (to a Johnson) and had a number of children.

She recalled that two of them had lived with her parents for a while after coming to Natchitoches Parish, named Seab (Seaburn) and Jeb Johnson. I checked the census records of Union Parish (1880) and found "Mandy" living with her husband, B. F. Johnson and other children. Jeb or Jep was living with Joseph Henry Shackelford and the census shows him as "nephew" to the head of household. So Cousin Bessie was right as I always found her to be. Although I had heard that we had Johnson relatives I never connected them with the Shackelfords and thought Uncle Bob Massey was an only child.

Also, Massey relatives in AL tell me that Martha Caroline another sister of Joe Henry Shackelford who married Joshua Massey in AL remarried after the death of Joshua and is believed to have had children.

Sorry about these mistakes. James Dewey O'Brien
