Notes for Paschal James SHACKELFORD:

====================================
From the Shackelford Clan Magazines of March 1947, p. 180
And this month we are again asking for more information of one Stephen Shackelford, who was born probably about 1775, and who wife was said to have been Martha, and whose children were Stephen, Jr., Paschal J., Zadock Daniel, John and Martha Ann.

Paschal J. Shackelford married Betsy Hickman, and Zadock Daniel Shackelford married Nancy Croft Hickman. Martha Ann Shackelford married Peter Robertson, and all of them married in Jefferson Co., Alabama, and some of the descendants live there yet. Information as to the ancestry and descendants will be very much appreciated
====================================

From the Shackelford Clan Magazines of July 1948, Pages 307-308
It is said that Paschal J. Shackelford, along with his brother Zadock Daniel, with the families of Joseph Hickman, Wiliam Pullen and others, numbering about 100 people, comprised the wagon train that left Pendleton District South Carolina, in the year 1817, for the Black Warrior river country, near Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.

Paschal J. Shackelford, was born in Georgia, 1800. He married Elizabeth Ann Hickman, daughter of Joseph and Martha Pullen-Hickman, Feb. 8, 1825, in Jefferson County, Alabama. They are known to have had the following children:
Joseph Henry- (married Harriet Massey).
Felix- (married ??
Caroline- (married ??
Martha C.- (married Joshua Massey, brother to Harriet)).
There were probably other children.

Paschal J. Shackelford was living in Jefferson County, Alabama, 1850, and in his home was one Martha Shackelford, who was born in Georgia., 1782. Probably his mother. He had brothers Zadock Daniel, John, Stephen and Joe Henry.
Any information regarding the ancestry of this man, or of his descendants, will be appreciated.

James Dewey O'Brien states:
"The Smith brothers, who did so much research in Wilkes County, Georgia, always believed that Henry was the father of Paschal and that accounted for the name Joseph (after Joseph Hickman) Henry (father Shackelford). To me, there is also the real possibility that Paschal and Zadock, who appeared in Alabama together, were the orphans referred to in the land lottery lists of Georgia in the early 1800s. I have found that two sons (or appear to be) of the old John died young and would have been of the right age to have left such orphans."

Also, from 1988 "Our Colonial Ancestors" page 102, James Dewey O'Brien states
"Although she (Sarah Elizabeth Shackelford) is undoubtedly descended from the immigrant, Roger Shackelford, as all the Shackelfords of Virginia were, we lack proof of one link in the chain: the parentage of Paschal J. Shackelford. Although circumstantial evidence indicates he was probably a grandson of Henry Shackelford of Elbert County, Georgia., that evidence is insufficient from which to draw a definitive conclusion at this point. Hopefully, someone someday will bridge the gap."

Generation No. 7
"Henry Shackelford is the probable father of Paschal and Zadoch Shackelford. This is the conclusion of many genealogist and authors who have done years of research on the subject. TK Jones of Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas James Dewey O'Brien (author of "Our Colonial Ancestors") and Carroll H Goyne of Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana top the list. Henry was born in Virginia and migrated to Elbert County, Georgia. Historians believe that all Shackelfords of the early Virginia Colonies to be Descendants of Roger Shackelford and his father John, a knight and cavalier of King Charles 1, that fled England to save his head. John is a descendant of a French nobleman named Jacques Le Fort who accompanied William the Conqueror in the invasion of England in 1066. The Anglicized version of Jacques Le Fort (Shackelford) means "Jack the Strong"."

1. I've corresponded with several other people who have searched the cemeteries around Union Parish. We have just about come to the conclusion that Paschal and Betsy died in Union Parish and were buried on their own land in unmarked graves or they started to Arkansas with Felix's family and died enroute. In the 1870 census, Felix had a son, Joseph, who was 8 month old and had been born in Oct. Therefore, they had to arrive in Arkansas in summer of 1869. There would have been time for Paschal and Betsy to become ill and die before the census was taken but they are not buried in that area either and I'm sure that Felix would not have left his parents graves unmarked. We may never know where they are buried.

2. According to the Shackelford Clan Magazine, Paschal, Zadock Daniel, Henry, and Stephen, Jr., were brothers and were sons of Stephen Henry Shackelford. T.K. Jones, the editor, begged for anyone to send him verification of this but in the 12 years or so that he wrote the quarterlies, if he ever found verification or proof of any kind, he kept it to himself.

Today I had a routine med. uptown and Neoma wanted to go also and stop by the DAR Lib. to see records she was interested in. I was interested in Skinners of course and had wanted to see a Paschall book which I had heard about as I have speculated that our Paschal Shackelford's first name may have been a family name. Also, there were families of Paschall's in Georgia near where we think it most likely that
the Shackelfords were from. (Some have speculated that our line sprang from Henry Shackelford of Elbert County, Georgia). That was what our Jeff. County AL descendants of Zadock Shackelford thought most likely also.

There were 9 children in the 1820 census record of Henry, Jr. in Elbert Co, GA and only 7 in the partial estate record of 1827. As for the 1820 census, Sterling Madison and Stephen A. would have been the 2 males under 10, James and John Hubbard the 2 males 10-16; Martha the female under 10; and Asa, Paschal, Henry III and Zadock fit the remaining (two 16-18 and two 16-26.
