Geoege Stovall grew up in England during the reign of King James 1 who had decended to the English throne from Scotland where the Church of England was not the ruling religion. This is the same King James who encourage and authorized the King James version of the Holy Bible, the first to bewritten in the English Language.
As a Quaker, George Stovall was an ecclesiastical non - conformist in a land where the Church of England was the official recognized Church. In 1649 when George Stovall was about 30 years old, Oliver Cromwell, a commomer, overthrew King Charles 1 who was beheaded. Cromwell, as a leader of the army and parliament, ruled England as a Commonwealth until his death in 1658. It is perhaps during that period that George Stovall joined the Quaker Church. The crown was restored and King Charles II ascended to the throne in 1660. He was a strong supporter of the Church of England. At the Easter session in 1661, George Stovall, yeoman of Albury, was cited for contempt of King Charles II the Church of England and the church's Albury parish because he did not pay a tithe to the Church of England.
George Stovall was a yeoman. The Oxford dictionary defines a yeoman as a freehold commomer under the rank of a gentlemen anciently qualified to serve on juries and vote for knights of the shire as probus et legalis homo.
