The Wallaces
Three members of the Wallace family fell under discipline of the church in what appears generally to be related incidents. James Wallace addressed the March 1851 conference stating that it had been reported he had been intoxicated. He satisfied the church of his innocence. Minutes do not indicate if this was James Wallace Sr. or James Wallace Jr.
A year later in the March 1852 conference a committee was appointed to look into the rumor that James Wallace Sr.. James Wallace Jr., and Peter Wallace had been drunk. The three men were to be invited to the next conference to make their defense.
At the April conference the committee reported that it had seen the three men and they, had all admitted being drunk, and seemed penitent.
James Wallace Jr. was present at the conference. He acknowledged being drunk, said he was sorry for it, and promised he would not do it again. The church unanimously forgave him.
Peter Wallace was also present. Acknowledging that he had been drunk, he expressed his sorrow and the church forgave him by a unanimous vote.
James Wallace Sr. was not present in this meeting and his case was referred to the next conference after much discussion. A committee was appointed to see James Wallace Sr. to inform him that his presence was required at the next conference and that a written acknowledgement would not satisfy the church.
James Wallace Sr. attended the May 1852 conference. He stated that the charge was true and that he was sorry and promised not to do such again. He further stated his belief that God had forgiven him and requested the church to forgive him too, which it did.
Not all stories end on a happy note. The January 1853 minutes note the appointment of a committee to cite James Wallace Sr. and Peter Wallace to conference. No specific charge is listed, but one would assume it might be the old problem of drunkenness.
No minutes appear for February. The March 1853 minutes indicate that James Wallace Sr. "owned the charge and said that if he knew that he would be turned out of the church he would not come to the church." Peter Wallace was reported to have said that "he had done too bad to talk about and he wanted the church to turn him out."
Details of this episode are not included in the minutes. In April 1853 Peter Wallace was received by restoration. He was also granted a letter of dismission.
In May 1853 James Wallace Sr. was received by restoration. He likewise was granted a letter of dismission.
