Notes for Willis Paschal ALLEN, Sr:

Willis, born in North Carolina and moved to Marengo County, Alabama and officiated at a marriage there on 21 Aug 1828. By 18 Sep 1835 Willis and family had moved to Grand Cane, Louisiana.

The Allen family, after a brief stop in Fannin County, Georgia, settled in northwestern Louisiana. They were on land between the villages of Grand Cane and Loganport, some 300 miles northwest of New Orleans. The latter community was a trading post sitting on the Sabine River, whose water served as the border between Louisiana and Texas. Loganport was a popular point of departure for pioneers heading into the new nation of Texas. Grand Cane was the first county seat of Caddo Parish, which was created in 1838. Willis Allen died in December 1837. It is not clear whether he died in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, or possible even across the river, in Texas. The Allen land would fall into DeSoto Parish, when it was created in 1843. The parish is named after Hennando DeSoto, who discovered the Mississippi River in 1541. Attracted by the lure of rich, delta farm land, the Allen and Wallace families, moved in the 1840's, north and above Shreveport, near the community of Bellevue, in Bossier Parish.
